A few years ago I read an article by the architect and urban theorist Andres Duany that stated that most people will walk no further than five blocks before they'll start using their car.  That got me thinking.  What could I walk to within five blocks of my home in Sacramento?  I live in Midtown, which means that there are plenty of places within walking distance for me to enjoy.  An historic library, excellent restaurants, coffee houses, antique stores, and even a bee supply store.

I'm even close to a light rail station that will get me to other areas with interesting five block activities.

This blog will be devoted to exploring my own community and many others, highlighting the wonders that can be found in five blocks squared (five blocks in any direction).

I also hope to encourage other people to submit ideas for their own communities and to post them as well.
